For the past year, a debate has been raging on the Internet and in Congress over "net neutrality" -- a term that might have more definitions than Baskin Robbins has flavors.
The term neutrality was coined by those who believe the federal government should impose regulations (like the rules that once governed phone companies) to ensure that network providers don't treat different customers differently with respect to the data carried on their networks.
Much of the debate has a Chicken Little aspect, with bloggers and Internet leaders such as eBay warning about fast and slow Internet lanes, "tiering" of service, the end of free online speech or even the end of the Internet as we know it because large corporations will control where consumers can go online. |
