Is FiOS in My City?

FiOS is currently not available in all Cities or States. Some States have signed Legislation paving way for Telecom companies to offer Video Service Statewide. On the other hand, some still have the old Laws on the books that require Telecom companies like Verizon to negotiate Video Franchises with individual Cities and Communities. There are over 33,000 communities out there that fall into this category. Yes you read it right 33,000!
A typical Franchise negotiation takes from 3 months to just over 1 Year to finalize! That gives cable operators a forum to delay consumer choice and increase costs for new competitors like Verizon. At this rate you can understand why it is taking a long time for you to get in on the fun. Your local government and Cable companies are bringing out the big guns in your city to try and squeeze all the juice out of these deals before you can play.

Question is, Who is Drinking the "Juice"?
Yes big brother tries to see if this new companies getting into the video business can also finance the new dog park by the lake, the new little league baseball field, the new street car train in the historic district and oh aye…. City Hall could use that new computerized, state-of-the-art, heated, constantly disinfected, graffiti-resistant, remotely monitored, well-lit, landscaped, wheelchair-accessible, ornamental-iron-and-brick-adorned automatic toilet. You know, we may not have the Statue of Liberty, white sand beaches or Big Ben, but we..........

I just wonder who pays for it.

Back to my point, if you want to know if FiOS has arrived in your hood, just click on the Map to get the scoop or Click on one of the state Links Below to read articles, reviews, and comments by your fellow citizens about FiOS in your state or City. Alternatively, if you see a giant golden King Kong statue that no one cares about, causing traffic jams and accidents at the corner of 1st and Main Street, it is a darn good sign FiOS has arrived. And Oh…, about the golden Crapper down city hall? You are paying for it.

Recently (Jan. & Feb. 2008) I have been seeing signs of fiber optic cable being run along 'A' highway and Highway 5 in Douglas County South of Ava, Missouri. In some places it is buried, in others it is strung on the telephone poles, next to some of the poles there is a green box about 18 inches wide and 36 inches tall beside some of the poles, with a sign posted next to it warning about fiber optic lines and calling an 800 number before digging in the area.

However, nobody I have spoke to knows anything about it. I spoke to a few companies that offer T1 service, and they say that companies are pretty tight-lipped about this sort of thing, as to not alert the competition. Has anyone heard anything?

I actually attended one of these "Community meetings" and it looked something similar to a Condo "Home owners Association" Meeting I attended about two years ago. I left with a bad taste in my mouth. The County officials seemed ready to make a deal with verizon then they started demanding that Verizon pay $17,000 in legal fees.

Verizon had very competent lawyers and it seemed under the law, verizon was not obligated to pay any Legal fees. The county's big guns realized it and started coming up with "creative" ways to have verizon pay for it. Like finance "some other" project in the city instead. I was like, "Are you kidding me??" Aren't this guys supposed to be upholding the Law? Now they are trying to come up with "creative" ways to circumvent the Law??? That got me thinking....Mmmmm As a free citizen, what circles can I create to keep the IRS out of the a Loop???

That is the absurd part, the consumers will end up eating the cost. I don't think verizon brings in their big guns just so the little guy can win. They are looking out for their own welfare. Though the little guy ends up getting a break "talking pocketwise here" but when the city asks for the flowers down "Rotten street" costing about $25 a plant, you kind of know who gets the bill. It is almost a chicken and egg thing here. Do you get stuck with the Bill if the City doesn't demand the cake? Anyone heard of outrageous requests out there?

I live in Fl. I heard in my City local officials were asking for a little league baseball field. I have nothing against baseball but why do I have to finance it? Are they going to finance my playboy chanell? Eventually all this demands the local governement is putting on verizon will end up on our tab correct?

Can't beleive the barrier between me and excitement is my Local government! They are holding Fios hostage just so they can get a Golden Toilet for City Hall?? This is Crap! Can't this folks get with the Programme? I have heard that everywhere verizon sets up its Fios Tv, cable rates go down by at least $20 a month! That is some good savings. Even if I end up dislinking Fios, I want it in my City just to Keep the cable Folks in Check! Panks..
